Union Plus Scholarship
|
Applications for the 2009 Union Plus Scholarship Program, which offers $150,000 in scholarships annually to union members, their spouses and dependants, are now available. Application deadline is January 31, 2008.
To download the application, visit www.UnionPlus.org/scholarships. Or, send a postcard with your name, return address, telephone number and international union name to: Union Plus Education Foundation, c/o Union Privilege, PO Box 34800, Washington, DC 20043-4800. The application deadline is January 31, 2009.
Since 1992, the Union Plus Scholarship program has provided more than $2.5 million to help fulfill the educational dreams of students who represent millions of working families across the nation. Union Plus Scholarship awards are presented annually.
All members of unions participating in the Union Plus programs (as well as their spouses and dependent children) are eligible to apply for scholarships. You do not need to participate in a program in order to be eligible.
How the Scholarship Program Works
In addition to demonstrating academic ability, applicants are required to submit essays of no more than 500 words describing their career goals, detailing their relationship with the union movement and explaining why they are deserving of a union scholarship.
Individuals must be accepted into an accredited college or university, community college or recognized technical or trade school at the time the award is issued. Graduate school students are also eligible for Union Plus Scholarships. There is no requirement to have participated in any Union Plus program in order to apply.

Bob Fields
3/15/1928 - 10/13/2008
Bob Fields, an outstanding jazz pianist and arranger, was a charter member of Hank Levy's band in the late 50's into the 60's and was a lifelong champion of Jazz. During his long career, he performed at most of the area's leading venues, including The Diamondback Lounge at the Lord Baltimore Hotel, The Prime Rib and The Chesapeake Restaurant. The Saturday, October 18 edition of The Sun carried a comprehensive article.
Mihaly "Misi" Virizlay
11/2/1931 - 10/13/2008
Mihaly "Misi" Virizlay, who served as principal cellist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra from 1962 -- 2002, was an outstanding artist and a true bon vivant who enjoyed playing poker nearly as much as playing cello. TEMPO
|
|
Through October 27, 2008, fifty-six 40-543 members have generously contributed $1,183 to
TEMPO. While this is a respectable number of participants, it is less than half of last year's
number.
You might be interested to know that your Local was one of the largest contributors to TEMPO in
2007. Also, you should read the International Musician to see how the increased funding of
TEMPO is having some impact on legislative progress. Let's keep it up!!
REMINDER:
Law does not allow unions to use their general funds for political activity; yet such
activity is necessary if unions are to avoid getting obliterated in the political process.
That's where TEMPO comes in.
Your voluntary contributions, combined with those of your colleagues, allows the
AFM to have some impact with respect to candidates who support musicians/labor's
interests, as well as legislation favorable to same.
